LEST WE FORGET

Post by ADF-TISM »

Hope you all took time to remember those who served for our freedom and way of life.

Not that i was ignorant to it all in the past but recently i found some very old papers and "stuff" in an old sea chest that belong to my father and his father and his father,, you get the idea. But it didn't really contain anything that any of these 3 guys looked at. They were just papers in an old box. I knew my great uncle was in the Navy, I had his service revolver till the soft cock gov wanted all pistols handed in. inc ones that u cant get ammo for! anyway i recently came into possession of the sea chest. Ive been looking and discovered my Great Uncle George received a DSM, Distinguished Service Medal. Only 75 have ever been given out. A bit more looking and discovered some old news paper clippings, seems he was one of the 1st at Zeebrug and had some big battle with some German machine gunners that were dug in. Of course i don't know the details and he hasn't written about it in any letters (not allowed to) i can only go by the newspapers and the interview he got. What surprised me more were all the letters to him from various Govt Dept's congratulating him. Even the local mayor hand wrote a letter thanking him. I wonder how much they would get now days.

I don't fully believe the war in Iraq is for the right reasons, but i'm proud of the fact or men and woman who are there, are serving OUR country supporting allies and are doing their best. [smilie=beerchug[1].gif]

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

(Please don't just Hooah this thread.)

I have no stories of grandparents fighting in wars.
I dont even have stories of my family ever being in any of the armed forces.

I do however know that my safety and the safety of all Australian's is rested in the best of hands.
Our service men and women are held in the deepest regard by the global community and so they should be by those of us at home!

Past, present and future Australian's in any role for our defence forces deserve the highest praise for putting their lives and sometimes morals on the line to do what is asked of them.

We will never forget.

Ode to The Huey

Thumping, growling, blades going round,
How Charlie must have hated that sound.
Twenty years on, it's with me still,
Won't go away. Never will.

Did you fly through those skies where the sun sets bright red?
Go out with the living, come back with the dead?
Now you fly through skies of a different hue -
Are you a Vietnam Veteran too?

You fly over home to the Air Force base
A bird of war in a peaceful place.
I wonder what action, what sights did you see -
The diggers you carried - was one of them me?

We might have met, you and I at "The Dat",
At Bien Hoa, The Horseshoe, Long Binh or Bearcat.
Most likely embarking at kangaroo Pad,
On one of a hundred such flights that I had.

A picture I've got shows a place I once saw
From up in the air, looking down through the door.
Did you see it too, the bomb cratered scene,
The vivid red scars in a carpet of green?

Did you see it too, did you hear the roar
Of what men do in the name of war?
With rockets and phosphorus, splinters and shells,
What would you say if you only could tell…?

You're getting old now my friend, as choppers go -
Years of hard work don't even show.
Your battle scars are all patched and clean -
You're lucky, Huey, you're just a machine.

But what happens, old friend, when your flying is through?
What do you think they'll do with you?
Will they cast you aside like the others before?
A forgotten piece of a forgotten war?
