My rides Upgrade

Post by ADF-Muzz »

My little CC Lancer Coupe is about to get a big upgrade.Bought myself a CB Lancer 4door GSR with a 4g63 n/a FWD.Going to graft the motor (same as Evo 1 2 3 minus the turbo) into the little rocket.Does anyone have any ideas for the brake upgrade. The GSR has 4 wheel discs but the rear aren't a straight swap. Not sure about the front I think it is a straight swap but dif stud pattern (100mm stud to 114mm stud) so it would have 14" on front and 13" on back so would have to change rears at the same time. Use the GSR Wheels for the front... And do the front with the GSR Brake upgrade.. as for the rear the rolling axle should be the same as the GSR and should be a straight Bolt off - Bolt on job, maybe have to weld some brackets on the axel to mount it thou.. I dont know too many people who have done a brake conversion... mosty just Engines.. (they usually buy the 1100$ brake upgrade kit.)

The rear brakes are not a straight swap as the stub axle is slightly longer.I need to change stubs cause the disc wont suit the old stud pattern.I could swap the front but as i said it would have 14's on front and the 13's on the back.I think I remember seeing I need proton stubs for the rear.but not sure. There is a big dif between 2  door car and 4 door car for some stupid reason. And never weld brake brackets.Must be bolt on or not at all.Welds stress under heat and brackets are usually made of cast iron or steel which is a bugger to weld properly. No cant cut down stub axle.cause it is longer i could get a spacer made up.yes odd it is longer and need a spacer but true and too complicated to explain.I think i read some where i use a disc of a proton and a stub axle from a galant but cant find it anywhere on the net.that would make it a bolt up job which i know you can do but  just cant find out how.been cruisen forums but no-one seems to answer.maybe i just havent found the right forum [smilie=flicks.gif]

In Queensland it is ilegal to have different sized tires front to back without a engineers certification (having uneven diameters screws up the proportioning valve in the break system.

it's also illegal to use wheel spacers without an engineers certification (having the wheels too far out creates more pressure on suspension components due to more leaverage) Some car manufactures are actualy starting to put things like break rotors and calipers inboard of the suspension so as to reduce the unloaded weight of the suspension.

so be carefull

The spacer I will be using if I do is inside the hub.It will bring the bearing out level with the nut stop.ie no matter how much you tighten it wont bind  [smilie=flicks.gif] the bearings.

its not about the bearings, its about increasing the leverage of the weight of the rim and wheel exceeding the specs of the suspension, causing the suspension to fail.

OK Archo you got it.Here is my little project.
This is the before of my little rocket.Goes quite well but you when the speed bug bites it never lets go.

And this is the Donor Car before,

And after except rear discs have to come off.Still sourcing a hub.The wife has been verry patient for now :)

A bit of a squiz inside. Not doing much just yet.Concentating on the mechanics first.

This is the motor coming out.

And this is the Beast going in.

This is the stainless muffler going on.2.25' inlet and 3.5" outlet.Note the burnt titanium look tip for that added bluff lol.2.25" inch system going on as well.Any bigger is overkill and effects engine performance.

And this is what I have done so far for the GSR brake swap.Straight swap except for some reshaping of the solid brake line.Pedal feel much better now and pulls up great.Cant wait for the rears to go on.

Hopefully the engine swap will be finished for the Brissy get together. I will post some more as the work is done if anyone interested.

I am not going for a body kit as they add weight and drag.As well they only really start working over 200kph anyway so a waste of money.I am going for the sleeper look anyway. It is a steel line for the brakes.copper is softer and flexes.I would love to go the 17's but can only go 15 legally.Like that's ever stopped me lol

New Drive shafts went in today.Got rid of that annoying shudder around 100kph.New Rack ends and tie rods go in monday. That will tighten the front end up a bit more.A strut brace goes in next Tuesday or Wednsday so I can throw her into the corners a bit harder.I finnally sourced some billet hubs for the rear end so the rear discs going on very soon.I will post some more pics soon. Rear strut brace went in last night.Idiots sent me the rear instead of front but I was going to buy the rears next anyway.I will make sure I get the right ones next.I will post a pic as soon as my daughter gives me back my mem card from her camera.Little Turd. Just waiting on the boss kit and the F1 style sports wheel.Ye I said I was not worried bout the interior till I did the mechanics but I just couldn't help myself. [smilie=flicks.gif]

This is the rear strut brace.stiffened the rear up a bit and works well.Takes corners a bit harder now.Front one coming within a week. One problem is no-one seems to be able to tell me where the rFactor testing track is.lol.

This is the sleeve I got made up for $10 a side to retro fit the rear hubs.sSomeone tried to sell me a set of billet hubs he reckoned cost him $640 to do the same job I done.Sometimes all you have to do is think outside the square a little.Bolt on isnt always the way to go.

This is the sleeve fitted.

And the hub once fitted.

The dif in size of the old drums and disc is obvious.

w00t the wreck is finally gone.Wife loves me again.

you can go the 17's as long as your overall diameter of the wheel/tyre doesn't exceed 1.5" over what was OEM. so if you get some 260/20 r17's it may be ok and even then you can still go bigger as long as you get a mod plate.

17inch mags with low/ultra-low profile tires would probably do the trick for you.

Only one problem, less rubber to burn ;)

My old car had 14inch rims on it, took 'em off, rolled 'em down the hill and put some nice (legal) 16inch low-profile mags on it instead :)

if you were gona do a turbo down the track you would have been better doing the mods while the engine was out. if you want to do any more than about 4-5psi you'll need to get forged pistons and conrods. and if you want to get it blue printed and up the rev limiter you'll need stronger valve springs and valves. but i seriously recomend against upping the revs. if the timing belt slips you'll end up with pieces of your valves and pistons caught in the cat, not a nice exercise.

If I was to go turbo it would be with a 4g63t not the 4g63 I have in now..The 4g63t has the oil squirter's under the piston to aid cooling and already set up for a turbo.Better pistons, rods etc.I would be wasting my time and money to go any further than a mildly tweaked 63t as it is only FWD and I would have traction probs.LSD is a little expensive as I would have to convert a AWD drive box to FWD.Not impossible but prohibitive with the budget.I would be better of buying a car already built up.$1400 for cams, pulley's and belt kit.$1500 min for a used 4g63t(add a rebuild they've all had a hiding) .$600 for a gearbox.$500 for New shafts to suit evo g/box.Evo wiring loom and ECU if you can find one.My upgrade is coming near to the end motor wise.Maybe a 65mm t/b and cold air induction.055 Maf sensor graft. And a chipped ECU.I will be concentrating on some bracing and lowering it and thicker sway bars and prob a set 17' rims and thats about it.About a years worth there.Lol [smilie=flicks.gif]
