Vietnam Veterans Day (Long Tan Day)

                                  LIFT OFF
Helicopters played a vital role in the Vietnam War. They were used:
• to provide access in thick jungle and mountainous terrain;
• to transport food, water and  ammunition;
• as gunships ('bushrangers') to support troops on the ground;
• for the quick transport of wounded back to skilled medical attention,   dramatically increasing the chance of survival ('dust offs');
• as troop carriers ('slicks'), providing a quick, safe mode of transport that was not possible by road convoy where landmines were a constant threat;
• to move and manoeuver quickly large, heavy pieces of machinery, guns and equipment using the big American Chinooks and Sky Cranes.
The helicopters used in Vietnam by the Australian Army, RAAF and RAN were the Iroquois (Huey) and Sioux.

At the age of 13 I lived in Malaysia with mum and dad as dad was in the RAAF as a carpenter . I remember when the Aussies and the Malaysians had war games for two weeks with blanks of course and there was AA guns and canons set up around the streets were we lived . The sound of those canons and guns firing in to the air every couple of minutes constantly sent shivers down my spine. It makes me realise how lucky we are that another war like that hasn,t  happened again thank christ for that . God bless all who lost their  lives.. Lest We Forget..

THanks guys & Candy  Its good to get back the feedback  muchly appreciated.

and Muzz the old SLR wasn't a bad weapon for its era, very reliable and generally kept on going when plastic gun M16 (Armalite) lost the plot. The yanks tended to think that the M16 was  weapon that didn't require a lot of maintenance and hence it tended to stuff up a lot - preventative maintenance went a long way. Clean the old SLR once a day and it looked after you. We ended up knowing how to strip down and basically reassemble it in the dark.
