DRINK DRIVER POST from MADD
I went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mum
So I had a sprite instead.
I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
That I didn't drink and drive,
Though some friends said I should.
I made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right,
The party finally ended,
And the kids drove out of sight.
I got into my car,
Sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming, Mum
Something I expected least.
Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
Mum, his voice seems far away.
My own blood's all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
This girl is going to die.
I'm sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high,
Because he chose to drink and drive,
Now I would have to die.
So why do people do it, Mum
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
Like a hundred stabbing knives.
Someone should have taught him,
That it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I'd still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mum
I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
And I'm so unprepared.
I wish that you could hold me Mum,
As I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say, "I love you, Mum!"
So I love you and good-bye.

I guess you need to be touched by the death of someone close to understand it.
I couldn't imagine anything more tragic than losing your daughter, or son, to such a senseless and needless act.
Ask my daughter, she's nine, and she can say, without missing a beat "Drink and drive and your a bloody idiot". We consider "Bloody" as a swear word for her, but we let her say that without any reprisal. Don't drink and drive - Simple

I've had some close friends pass away in a car crash, not due to their driving, but to others being stupid on the road.
I strongly agree with Nobbies.
And my heart goes out to those who have lost family and or friends.

Chris aka FDG Stitch was a top bloke and we gamed for many years with him.. so sad to hear the news today (23-09-2018), only a couple years older than me..(ADF-Cheech) LIFE is SHORT...May Stitch rest in peace, condolences to his family and his friends here and beyond ADFTEAM.
the penalties for drink drivers are just too lenient. Too often repeat offenders just keep going to court for DD and its not until they kill someone that anything is really done about it. More people die each year because of DUI than from people doing burnouts and such but someone doing a burn out more that twice gets their car confiscated and sold at auction with the money going to the state coffers. but someone caught DD gets a couple hundred $ fine and 6 months suspended licence TIME AFTER TIME AFTER TIME. punishments should fit the crime. DD should be the same as attempted murder, YOU made the choice to drink, YOU made the choice to drive so therefor YOU made the choice to attempt to kill anyone who may be in your way. repeated DD should recive jail time. It should be criminal law not trafic law.

Edjamacte yourselves.
Poems are too cutsie... I respond better to cold hard statistics. Pages 24-27.
Interestingly, mass market media has only a negligable effect on changing sociatial behaviour. In fact, the adtertising campaign shown in this Who study actually ran over a period of INCREASED incidences of drink driving in New Zealand.
It is enforcement of existing rules and laws pertaining to drink driving which ultimately changes behaviour from all the evidence I have been exposed too. Bluntly, countries with weak, or poorly enforced social laws suffer the highest rates of drink driving.
You want to stop drink driving? Find out what the penalty for a first offence is here in Australia. It would make you vomit. It is barely registered as a crime IMO.
