Samhain

Post by ADF-Dave »

In order to appease the gods, the Druid priests held fire rituals. Prisoners of war, criminals, the insane, animals were burned alive in baskets. By observing the way they died, the Druids believed they could see omens of the future. Two thousand years later, we've come no further. Halloween isn't evil spirits. It isn't goblins, ghosts or witches. It's the unconscious mind. We're all afraid of the dark inside ourselves.

But we are in Australia not America - and you can thank the bloody press and American business influences to try and commercialize it and bring it here

Dont believe/celebrate it. We have enough Americanization as it is. We are AUSTRALIAN and should be bloody proud of it.

no dani - its never been anything here-lately the kids have been trick & treating(door knocking) but I'm not sure where its started from other than the press and more likely commercial/business (confectionery)seem to be pushing it.

It really has no relevance in this country darls its really only a commercially driven thing.

Didn't originate in America. Didn't think so ... I remember trick or treating when I lived in England.

Halloween was originated in Scotland about 3,000 years ago. It was a Pagan holiday known as "Samhain." The acient Romans also adopted the religious parts of samhain and combined it with Roman excess. It later grew to England and started the dressing up and begging for sweets aspect. During trades with Engalnd and America, Americans started having their own Halloween and from there it grew to what it is today in the states.

Yes, I have been aware that Halloween is not a part of Australian culture. But I believe the history of it can be interesting in itself to anybody.
