Hi guys - been a while, JP[AU] here (aka JP-HyH, wa04051)
Its time to upgrade the old banger (P4, IDE drives, on board sound, punches out about 25fps) how fu**ing embarrassing I know!!!
From memory a few of you guys are quite the jizz on PC builds and I thought I would get your feedback about my proposed system.
FYI I've never actually built a system from the ground up before, but I've swapped in and out plenty of bits. My only concern is that I end up with a system that unstable and crashes regularly, which is the only thing holding me back.
This is what I have researched and looking at (all prices ex staticice / MSY):
MOBO Gigabyte ex58 UD5 (rev1.0) $408
VGU Gainward GTX 295 $699
CPU Intel i7 920 $448
RAM Kingston DDR3 1600mhz 6GB (3x2) $135
PSU Corsair 750W $205
HDD either 2 x 500GB raid 0 config or 1 small HDD for OS and one 500GB for progs (interested to know you thoughts about this)
Sound Auzen Prelude $280
Noctua NH-U12P cooler $85
Case ???
Cans: prob audio technica ath ad700 + clip on mic but open on this
Reuse:-
G11 and G5
27" Dell LCD
OS = XP (upgrade to win 7 when it comes out)
I have quite a bit of external storage space to cater for a raid 0 config
MOBO needs to be able to support a second gfx card down the track and I would like to have esata for external hardware connections
Cheers fellas, I noticed your "love in" is later today - enjoy
JP

a few small pieces of advice:
go the 285 not the 295. currently the drivers for the 295 are pants and i have heard nothing positive about the card outside of peoples 3dmark scores. in the real world the 285 is the better card.
if your going down a raid route try to make sure the hdds have a 32mb cashe size. it shouldn't cost you any more but will shave your seek times a little.
get a nice big full size tower or at least a large mid. your gfx card and the noctura will need the room. you will need to look at the +$150 range. worst case, look at the antec 900 as a point of reference but i highly recommend that you don't buy it. the thermaltake v9 is a much smarter option.
if your spending all this money... get a g15 not a g11.

sweet thx finger -
I actually read an article (tom's HW from memory) where they tested 2 x 275 vs one 295 and the 2 x 275 actually outperformed it in most tests. But 275 is just about exactly half of a 295
The thermaltake case you mentioned can be had for $125 at msy (syd)
btw I was trying to say that I'm re-using the g11 I already have. I don't figure that its worth upgrading to g15 for a little lcd screen
btw II - nice avatar, is that photshopped at all or was that the actual picture?

yep, the sig and avi are both photoshoped. the avi i actually didn't do myself but found on the net.
nice case choice there on the tower. its a very specific choice - how come you've gone down this route?

Only based on some reviews and their rating checked out some others antec 1200 but I found the Thermaltake Spedo today which I really likeFDGFinger wrote:nice case choice there on the tower. its a very specific choice - how come you've gone down this route?
