New build

Post by FDGFinger »

well guys - it's been a productive day in the Finger household. I have just 95% completed a new build for Gnarly, one of our -=[FDG]=- members. it's all together but for the graphics card. i won't go through the full specs as that would be stealing his thunder so here is the computer porn he's allowed me to put up. (the missing graphics card is going to be a 1G 4870! kiss his face).
I know a similar post is on our forums but i'm pretty happy with the work so i thought i'd post it around the traps. the whole build is a brand new quad w/1066ddr2, a 1G 4870, possible raid using 2 x 16MB cashe size hdd's, and alot of good brand names wedged inside.

CPU Pipe cooling that's the way to go!
Evolution is just so unlikely to produce complex life forms.

not rude at all m8. i built it for a friend... gave him a good deal on it. i just can't blab about the size of another fellas pockets. the whole rig came with a 22" monitor, g15 and 2.1 sound. some ball parks are - $400 ish for the cpu, $400+ for the graphics card. needless to say he did go to town a little. my setup only cost around $650 all up lol. but i've spent many an hour under the hood tweeking it. here are some of it's latest results:

cost is defined by 2 camps. what you want to do with it and how long do you want to own it. i've build a fair few gaming rigs... a full top end rig is going to cost about $4k today. the box above is well under that price.
if you keep your peripherals from your old rig - monitor, keyboard, mouse, hdds (depending on their age and quality) and psu you can bring the price down dramatically. to put together something that can play crysis on settings of high will cost around $1400. to build a setup that can play crysis on very high on a large monitor about $1800. to do the lot and future proof it would be about $2k. the box above will be valid for at least 3 years and has had parts installed in it that can be upgraded, added to, fiddled with the lot. (before i hand it over tomorrow i've just finished a very mild overclock and taken the cpu from 2.66GHz to 3.2GHz). the mobo alone can support 8gb of ddr2 1200MHz, has 2 x pci-e 16 slots with built in ati crossfire, can support cpu speeds up to 1600MHz... basically when software catches up to this thing, (est 2 years minimum), the owner can just upgrade parts rather than buy a new computer.
i like to build custom rigs so price really depends on what it's use is for. if you want a brand new machine to play aa3 and crysis on medium on it could be as cheap as $1000 for a completely new rig. if you build it yourself and use old peripherals... even cheaper. i built mine from scratch for $650 but she's in desperate need of a new graphics card. i've seen 8800's going for as little as $100 and even the 9600gt's for $120. with no name ddr2 1066 for as little as $23 a gig. if you want some tips just drop me a pm. having read medic's post he too know his way around home builds.
