if you can go for grid connect. that way you can actualy earn money by producing more power than you need. also the government rebate only apply to grid feed. If you realy want to go for the self contained get a combo of solar and wind so that even if its a rainy day you can still get power from the wind turbine. A good web site to go to to calculate your needs is http://www.esolar.com.au/design.php it will tell you exactly how many pannels you need and how hany batteries. you can adjust how many days without sun you want and everything. Also if you live in a hot climate your better off going for wet filled batteries, Gels dont like heat. wet filled require more maintenance but they will, if maintained properly and not stored in an enclosed space, last around 20% longer. Trust me i did alot of research when i worked at battery world.

were you gonna go grid feed? also 20k would only be for the kit. it wouldn't include install. unless your house has been built with solar in mind you can count on at least another 5k for retrofitting. This something most people don't think about cos homes in the most of the country don't need retro fitting cos they don't get cyclones. you gotta remember you got a lot of sail area up there an if you don't secure the panels directly to the roof trusses you need to set them up on racks so that if you do get a big wind the racks are riped off and blown away without leaving a big hole in your roof leaving the rest of the roof to go with it. Not sure if thats law but it was recommended to me by the people who install them. its actually allot less expensive to build the system while your building the house. you design the house to have the correct roof pitch, pointing the right way, and can make it so that the panels actually make part of the roof tiles. There is allot to think about. and it is a big investment. If you do your homework and get all the info it will increase the value of your home massively. Also in about 5 years the next gen panels will start appearing. these new ones are massively more efficient. if you think of the solar spectrum as being a meter wide. current panels use no more than 20 cm of it. these next gen ones will make power from closer to 60 cm. they will be around twice the price of current ones but last 3 times longer and it wont take long for the prices to come down.
Ps. forget about all these things that steer the panels or mirror kits to shine more sun on the panels. panels rarely breakdown (no moving parts to break) putting steering devices on the panels is just one more think to break! and a mirror kit that doubles the sun hitting the panels increase the output of the panel by about 75% but will halve the life expectancy.
