NBN - Good or Bad??

Post by ADF-BUNGY »

It is being debated to death on Whirlpool --> Whirlpool - NBN discussion

But I wanted to get some other opinions?

For me, it can't come soon enough. [smilie=Crash[1].gif]

For those who want more info, tech stuff etc here are some links to get you started

Obviously if no-one is interested, this thread will die.

Unlike others that seem to go on for years for no apparent reason [smilie=jpshakehead.sml[1].gif]

Last I heard in my neck of the woods (a regional area), fibre will only be connected to the node ie the exchange, which it currently is, so ADSL2+ would and is the best option for those close enough to the exchange.... so basically no change for us here. Now if they were to connect fibre to the home then that's a whole new ball game.

Cheers

Pffff, will never happen and no ISP can afford it. Lets see what happens when the yanks try and do it first, its a hot topic over there.
Evolution is just so unlikely to produce complex life forms.

The yanks won't do it.
Why should we wait for them to try?

I still say bring it on.

I am currently on a pair gain exchange (like many other people) - with no access to ADSL etc.
My only options, at the moment, are a wireless non 3G connection (which I am on $70/m for 7GB) or 3G ($120/m for 10GB - largest plan) access.
If Telstra swapped out the DCS20's I might be fine, but it is not viable according to Telstra.

not the fastest. a pain when I have to send art files to printers - upto 100mb.

http://www.yourbroadband.com results:
Glenore Grove, QLD (-27.549807,152.418015)
Fixed Service details
Exchange: HATTON VALE DA005 (Zone: 2)
ABG applications for this post code: 9
Line of Sight: 4510m
Nearest 3G Towers
Telstra:2.3KM
Optus:2.3KM
Three:No Known Sites in area
Vodafone:No Known Sites in area

Not a lot of choice.
I live in hope as I am about 10km from a town on the NBN rollout list.
So I might be lucky in a couple of years

wow, people actually willing to discuss the topic, i really am impressed ... ok, so i'm a geek, i know techy stuff, but i'm also a realist ...

a few things that i've been focused on

FACT ... 43bn$'s ... 23 million people, 11+ million people of working age, i did the sum's a little while ago, but it effectively means that every single tax payer, is paying 4.5k for the NBN ...

PERSPECTIVE ... i happy with my internet speeds as are a lot of people, then there's people who dont use the net at all, or have no possible use for faster internet (i.e. people that're happy on 3g connection) ... lets hazard a guess and say that there is 20% that would actually use faster internet (myself included) and of these, how many would NEED it ...

SUMMARY ... 20% of 11million @ 4.5k each, means that 2,200,000 people will actually notice the difference and put money towards the system ...

WHY ... fear tactics, 'we need it for remote people to be able to access doctors', i'm sorry, but if the matter is urgent enough to not be able to wait an extra 5 minutes for a jpeg to download, you're not going to be able to fix it yourself ... also, is this going to be an excuse to get rid of regional doctors?

POLITICS
lab - 43bn for 100% of the population (now reduced to 93% of the population), 100mbps with guaranteed 12mbps
lib - 4.8bn for 90% of the population (never got to be tested), but i'm currently on 8mbps

They say that we need it for the future, by the same token, i should buy a forklift, i may not be able to use it now, but one day, in the future, there's a darn good chance that i may find a use for it ...

Now, i dont like being pessemistic, so i wont offer gripes without an alternate solution, the 4.8bn $ option wont be ideal, wont be much different to what we have now, BUT, if they invested the other 38.2bn$'s to research and development into wireless technology, we could have an option which is a lot cheaper to deploy and can be sold internationally (bearing in mind that of the 43bn, most of the money will be spent on laying fibre optic cables nationally, we've got a fkn big country, and twisted pair's are expensive as it is, along the lines of 50k per km or something like that) ...

in short, the option is overkill, spending a lot of money on a hypothetical long term solution, which is likely to be obsolete in the next 10 years time when wireless has become a developed technology ...
