Macca's Guide to Slipstreaming windows,SP3, RAID Drivers

Post by ADF-McMann »

Macca’s Noob Guide To Slistreaming Windows Install Disc or
HOW TO INSTALL RAID DRIVERS WITHOUT A FLOPPY DRIVE.

Ok if you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering how slipstreaming can help you and what is it, so let us start there.

You’ve just built your cracking new rig and turned it on 500 times to stuff around in BIOS and now the moment of truth comes where you install Windows. This guide will concentrate on XP Professional as that is the windows version that I use and will continue to use until Vista is replaced with something I like better then XP. However I believe you can slipstream any windows install disc, just search the net.

OK so you’ve thrown a sickie so you can install windows and then spend the day patching it, cleaning the registry, patching it some more, installing drivers, validating, updating and all the many, many things that windows demands to make it current and secure. WRONG…… Still throw the sickie by all means but instead use slipstreaming to recompile your windows installation to include all the service packs, updates and drivers for your system and then spend the day playing your favourite games… :ozrockon:

‘Sounds out of reach for my experience’ I first thought but with a little bit of reading I was able to do it and if I can then so can you… I learnt this out of necessity as my raid 0 configuration required an F6 install of windows, where I was suppose to load the raid drivers from a floppy disc.. Couple of problems with this, who thinks to buy a floppy drive on a modern rig anyway and second it just wouldn’t work with the old floppy drive I had…. But with slipstreaming I was able to not make my XP Professional SP2 install into a SP3 install and I was also able to put the raid drivers into the install so no F6 BS was needed. Now that is using the grey matter, hahahaha.

Slipstreaming also comes in handy if you want to install windows on multiple computers at once without needing to throw 2 sickies or if you want to put the windows ISO on a flash drive for flash booting, mind you I am only guessing at the latter but more and more motherboards are flash drive bootable so in theory this could work.

OK so now you can see how slipstreaming can help us save time, how do we actually do it? In this example I had a XP Pro with service pack 2 disc, but needed to add the raid drivers for my chipset and I wanted service pack 3 as well, I know there where a few other patches that would also be needed but my foremost need was the raid drivers so I keep my slipstream pretty basic, remember I am a NOOB.. :goodjob:

First things first you will need a couple of things to do this process but all are accomplished with your old computer and internet:
1. Find your windows disc and see what SP you have
2. Go to Microsoft Downloads
'The Windows Download' site and download the service pack you need and any other hotfixes and security updates you want in the initial install.
3. Go tonLite site and download NLITE (FREEWARE) as this is the program that will handle the slipstream process.
4. In my case I wanted to use the intel raid drivers for my chipset so I went to the Intel site and searched raid driver (chipset number)
5. I hadn’t reinstalled NERO since a virus wiped out my system so I also went and downloaded a 15 day trial version of NERO, but you can use Roxio as well.

That’s it now you’re ready to rock and roll. For an in depth read on how to use NLITE go here http://www.nliteos.com/guide/ but it’s all pretty strait forward for what I wanted to do.

Step one.
Assuming you have now downloaded to your hearts content and have NLITE and NERO or equivalent installed, now start up nLite and insert your windows original disc in the drive. And follow my pictorial. Remember there is lots more you can add and take out of your slipstream of Windows compared to this guide but that is a whole other post.

Press>NEXT and ignore loading or importing previous sessions
Press>NEXT again, Now a screen will appear like this
Select what you want to alter in the new version you are making,
Check>Service Pack, Drivers, Unattended, Make bootible ISO, (Uninstall Components, Options and Tweaks, if you know what your doing).

Press>NEXT, skip the options page and Press>NEXT again, now changes you

Now the files are ready to rock and roll your new machine, just have to make the ISO image

Burn this image to a Blank CD or my desktop and call it Win_XP_SP3_Raid

If you burnt the ISO image to the desktop, use your burning software to copy the ISO image to a CD and you are now ready to go with your install.
