Nope, that planet was created by spearizing a rock texture, cutting away around the circle, adding a inner shadow, inner glow, outglow and a the planet shadow was created with a Gaussian blur.

Would it have not been easier to take a photo that all that in/out/out/in stuff?

Well sure it would have been easier with the right camera, but who has a $2000 slr camera with a 2million meter lense on it to look at planets with?
